League to register voters before deadline
April 1 poses a special opportunity for Amarillo area residents, and it’s not for fools! It’s the deadline for citizens to be registered to vote if they wish to cast their ballot in upcoming city, school or college elections.
League of Women Voters volunteers will be registering voters 18 or older (or who will be 18 by election day on May 1) in the next few days as follows:
- Santa Fe Building, 9th and Polk, and the Randall County Annex at 4320 S. Western, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on “deadline day” Thursday, April 1.
May 1 is election day for the Amarillo City Council, Amarillo Independent School District (ISD) board, the Amarillo College Board of Regents, the Canyon City Council, the Canyon ISD board, River Road ISD and the Panhandle Groundwater District. The Bushland ISD will also hold a $94.3 million bond election to address rapid growth in its district.
- April 1 is the last day voters can register to vote and be eligible to vote in the May 1 elections, said Jami Cowart, LWV voter registration chair. The League has also registered voters at several local high schools.
To help inform voters, the League will sponsor virtual candidate forums on April 11 and 18 on Panhandle PBS and is preparing Voters Guides for distribution, said Sonya Letson, League president.
