HPPR Concert: Jackson Grimm at Starlight Canyon @ HPPR Concert: Jackson Grimm
Jan 7 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Jackson Grimm marries folk-pop melodies with the lonesome sound of traditional Appalachian music. In a region with a strong music culture, it is no surprise that Grimm’s songwriting is representative of his musical birthplace: Asheville, NC. Grimm studied Traditional Music at Warren Wilson College under the tutelage of great players like Wayne Erbsen and Kevin Kehrberg. He also studied guitar, banjo, mandolin, and singing with the Western North Carolina music master, Josh Goforth, who also produced Grimm’s debut album, The Bull Moose Party (2019).

Grimm also plays extensively as a sideman for his father, singer-songwriter Tim Grimm. Touring with Tim has taken him to over 20 states in the US and 7 countries in Europe (Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, & England). He has appeared on, written songs on, and co-produced the last two Tim Grimm albums. Jackson has also shared the stage and played with singer-songwriters Ben Bedford, Krista Detor, and Jennie DeVoe.

NATIONAL BUBBLE BATH DAY
On a cold winters day, relaxing in a nice warm/hot bubble bath sounds like the perfect way to commemorate National Bubble Bath Day, which is celebrated annually on January 8th.
The bubbles on top of the water (also known as foam bath or foaming bath) insulate the bathwater, keeping it warmer for a more extended period.
• Children find bubble baths fun and enjoy playing with the bubbles, which entice them to take their baths.
• Some bubble bath, bath foam, or foaming bath serves a dual purpose and can also be used to wash skin or hair.
• Bath foam preparations may be in the form of a liquid, gel, or as solids in the form of powders, grains, or tablets.

NATIONAL WINTER SKIN RELIEF DAY
As winter kicks into high gear, National Winter Skin Relief Day on January 8 reminds us of all the ways we can keep our skin from withering under the harshest of elements.
The dropping temperatures outside and rising thermostats inside sap the amount of moisture in the air. Our skin is first to notice.
Joshua Zeichner MD, Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research at The Mount Sinai Hospital, makes a few recommendations to help us keep our skin hydrated through the winter. When the chill sets in, avoid the temptation to take those long, hot showers. The heat strips skin of its natural oils (called ceramides) and causes inflammation. Causing the skin cells to swell, when they dry they become loose like poorly grouted tiles and crack.
Instead, take shorter, lukewarm showers and use gentle cleansers. Harsh soaps with surfactants and claims of pH balance can be harsh on the skin. And don’t scrub! Be tender and let the water and lather do the work.
If you have dry, cracked skin, look for a cream or ointment with light petrolatum, hyaluronic acid and ceramides – the natural fats that make up the grout between the skin cell tiles. ~ Joshua Zeichner MD
After bathing, pat the skin dry with a soft towel. Rubbing causes more irritation and inflammation. With the door closed to keep the humidity in, add a moisturizer.
When dressing, wear layers. The closest layer should be made of natural fibers. Soft fabrics like flannel and cotton cause little to no irritation compared to synthetic materials. Layers also are more effective against cold weather.
Winter skin relief comes many forms. Our skin needs hydration at night, too. Adding humidity to the air with a cool mist humidifier will not only hydrate your skin but will also provide a more restful sleep.

Amarillo Fire Department: Badging Ceremony @ Badging Ceremony
Jan 9 @ 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Information Release

January 8, 2020 – On Thursday, January 9, 2020, the Amarillo Fire Department will be conducting a Badging Ceremony for ten firefighters who recently completed their probationary year with the department. The ceremony will be hosted at AFD’s Fire Administration Building, 310 S. Van Buren and will begin at 3 p.m.

This ceremony is a fire service tradition and has been conducted by AFD for many years during our annual Awards Ceremony. However, AFD has chosen to celebrate this milestone in these firefighters’ careers with a dedicated event moving forward. When a firefighter begins their employment with AFD, they receive a Probationa1y Firefighter Badge that is worn with their uniform. Each firefighter remains a Probationary Firefighter for one year. Throughout that initial year of their career, firefighters must pass written and hands-on tests, showing competency in their knowledge and skills, learn the policies and procedures of AFD, and integrate with their associated crews as an effective member of the team.

Upon completion of this year, probationary firefighters are relieved of their “probationary” status and awarded an Amarillo Fire Department Firefighter Badge. This is a symbol of membership of our department, the commitment to excellence and their dedication to their job. It is not an award. Rather, it is a symbolic right of passage into the brotherhood of firefighters.

The ceremony will be followed by light refreshments and photo opportunities for firefighters and their family in attendance. Media is invited to attend. Please direct any questions to the A.FD Office of Public Affairs, 806.378.9340.
