Amarillo Habitat for Humanity Celebrates 114th Home with Parade and Virtual Blessing

Amarillo Habitat for Humanity (AHFH) is excited to announce the completion of our 114th home at 2703 S Roberts Street for the Hel Family. Celebration for this family’s dream come true will be Friday, May 29th at 11 am. The public is invited to join in our first-ever parade home blessing.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the traditional home blessing has been changed to a parade-style celebration. Anyone who is willing and able to participate needs to line up on 27th and Wilson on the east side of the AHFH office, facing north at 10:45 am. At 11 am, the parade will begin and will pass by the new home of the Hel Family to celebrate their patience and hard work toward their home. Car decorations are encouraged. In addition, a video commemorating the blessing will be released on Amarillo Habitat social media platforms.

Taw Naw Hel and Lway Lway will receive keys to their brand-new 3-bedroom, 2-bath home later this week. Originally from Thailand, the family moved to Amarillo over seven years ago and joined the Amarillo Habitat program in January 2017. “I am extremely proud of this family for working hard to achieve their goal of home ownership,” says Sarah Curtis, Director of Family Services at AHFH. “They contributed over 900 sweat equity hours to our program while working full time and attending school. It has been a privilege to build a relationship with this family and I can’t wait to see them turn the house we built into a home!” In addition to their volunteerism, the family put a $1,500 down payment toward their home and completed a financial stability course. The mission of Amarillo Habitat is to provide safe, affordable housing, and for the Hel Family, this was a dream come true. “Because of [AHFH], we now live in safe neighborhood, with a safe house,” says the family. “Thank you to our Habitat Family!”

In an effort to keep the cost of the home low, organizations throughout the community have graciously contributed to this home. Donors who made this possible are: Bank of America, City of Amarillo, Cobblestone Custom Home Designs, Evans Appraisal Service, FirstBank Southwest, Gresham & Associates, Inc., Happy State Bank, Interstate Bank, Junk Monkey, Marble Depot, Schneider Electric, Texas Residential and Commercial Roofing, Valspar Paint, Wells Fargo, and Whirlpool.

Amarillo Habitat for Humanity partner families are selected by a committee from a pool of applicants that meet certain qualifications including HUD income, credit references, and employment history. On top of this, committee members will visit their current living arrangements. If an applicant is selected, the family will begin requirements toward their home. Once the house is complete, the family is eligible for a 25-30 year, no interest mortgage note that will allow them to become first-time homeowners.

Amarillo Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to building safe, affordable housing for qualified, low-income families. Founded in 1981, Amarillo Habitat for Humanity has served 114 families in our community. For more information about how to volunteer or donate, please call
