Amarillo ISD: Prospective Pre-K/Kindergarten Parents & Kids Invited to Ready, Set, Vámonos!
Amarillo ISD invites parents and kids to Ready, Set, Vámonos! to one of eight elementary school campuses for a special event designed to introduce families to the District’s Pre-K and Kindergarten programs.
Ready, Set, Vámonos! is for families with children who turned four or five-years-old by September 1, 2020 and who are not already enrolled in an AISD Pre-K or Kindergarten program. The event will take place Saturday, February 27 at 10 a.m. at these schools: Coronado Elementary, Eastridge Elementary, Forest Hill Elementary, Humphrey’s Highland Elementary, Sanborn Elementary, San Jacinto Elementary, South Lawn Elementary and Sleepy Hollow Elementary (Kindergarten only at Sleepy Hollow).
Families who attend Ready, Set, Vámonos! will go on a scavenger hunt and explore the school with their child, and kids will have the opportunity to interact with teachers in the classrooms and take home some new books.
One of the most important perks for parents who attend is the opportunity to ask questions they have about sending their young child to school. Like many other school districts across the state and country, Amarillo ISD’s Pre-K and Kindergarten enrollment is down because some parents have chosen to skip Pre-K or sit out this school year entirely. AISD educators believe that early childhood education is essential for strong futures for both children and their communities.
“We want parents to know we’re ready for their little one when they’re ready, and this event will give families the opportunity to come and get comfortable with the school and the teachers, and ask us anything they want to learn more about,” said Brittany Hinz, Amarillo ISD Early Childhood Education Coordinator. “This may help ease a parent’s mind about choosing to take this important step and enrolling their child in Pre-K or Kindergarten, even during these unprecedented times. Kids will get to have some fun around the campus and work out any jitters they might have about starting school.”
Along with the obvious educational and social benefits of early education programs, children get a boost in other important ways. Those who attend Pre-K or Kindergarten in AISD receive free breakfast and lunch at school, basic school supplies and technology like Chromebooks, physical education and vision and hearing screenings, teachers and counselors who support their emotional and academic growth and access to dual language and ESL programs.
Families who know a child who would benefit from starting Kindergarten or Pre-K this spring are encouraged to extend an invitation to Ready, Set, Vámonos!
“It may sound surprising, but it is not too late to enroll for this school year. Children who are already four or five-years-old can enroll now and start right away,” said Hinz. “And, we have virtual and in-person learning options available for both programs.”
Parents can learn more about each program and find helpful information about determining Pre-K eligibility and campus location at amaisd.org/EarlyEducation or by calling 806-326-1320.
