AUSTIN – Don’t mess with Texas is launching a contest as big as the Lone Star State to find its new anti-litter theme song. The Don’t mess with Texas “Lone Star Song Search” invites Texans to compose an original song to compete for prizes provided by iHeart Media, Guitar Center and the School of Rock. Two winners will be selected in two different categories with each winning valuable prizes.
“The contest is an exciting way for Texans to add their voice to Don’t mess with Texas,” said Becky Ozuna, program administrator for the Don’t mess with Texas campaign. “We are seeking fresh and unique songs, written by Texans, to creatively communicate the importance of keeping our state clean and litter-free.”
The Don’t mess with Texas “Lone Star Song Search” is open to Texas residents, ages 13 and above. Contest rules and entry criteria can be found at Dontmesswithtexas.org. Contestants should submit their completely original song, up to 30 seconds long, by video, incorporating the Don’t mess with Texas tagline and an anti-littering message. To be eligible, entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2020.
Don’t mess with Texas will choose one winner in the Best Original Song category, who will receive a home recording studio donated by Guitar Center. The second winner will be chosen from a band or musician currently enrolled at the School of Rock for their best original song and accompanying essay. This winner will receive a School of Rock Scholarship donated by iHeart Media. The Don’t mess with Texas “Lone Star Song Search” winners will also join the ranks of other notable performers featured in the Don’t mess with Texas campaign throughout the years including Willie Nelson, George Strait, The Randy Rogers Band and Las Fenix.
Don’t mess with Texas has been educating Texans about litter prevention since 1986. The program includes a grassroots partnership with Keep Texas Beautiful, annual “Trash-Off” community outreach events and the Adopt-a-Highway volunteer program.

Holy Innocents Day @ Holy Innocents Day
Dec 28 all-day

Holy Innocents Day, observed annually on December 28th. The day commemorates the execution of the innocent, male children in Bethlehem as told in Matthew 2:16.

Also known as the Feast of the Holy Innocents (and referred to as Childermas) refers to King Herod’s order found in Matthew’s account of the king’s reaction to the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy. This day is observed in the Western churches on December 28th and Eastern churches on December 29th. These children are considered martyrs, Saints of God, by the Church.

Pledge of Allegiance Day @ Pledge of Allegiance Day
Dec 28 all-day

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE DAY

Pledge of Allegiance Day on December 28th commemorates the date Congress adopted the “The Pledge” into the United States Flag Code.

Congress formally gave recognition for the Pledge of Allegiance on December 28, 1945. Francis Bellamy receives credit for writing the Pledge of Allegiance. The Youth’s Companion, a magazine for young people, first published it anonymously on September 8, 1892, under the title “The Pledge.” It was written in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America.

In 1923 and 1924, the National Flag Conference inserted text of the pledge into legislation. Though modifications were made, the pledge remained nearly the same. At the same time, the conference didn’t designate it as the official pledge. In its original form, it read:

“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

The small changes resulted in this version:

“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

On Flag Day in 1954, Congress added the words “under God” in response to the anti-Communist opinion sweeping the country during the Cold War.

National Hero Day @ National Hero Day
Dec 29 all-day

On December 29th, National Hero Day honors the people we look up to and who inspire us to be the best person we can possibly be.

If asked to define the word hero, many of us will name the qualities that demand a person rise above, the qualities that genuinely drive a person to be stronger, smarter, kinder and more than the average human being. They are the people who give when they have nothing to give. Heroes act before anyone else realizes there’s a problem. They volunteer to put someone else before them.

Our heroes may be the first responders who save us from a dangerous situation. They may be a mentor, like a parent or a teacher. As role models, heroes guide us through the examples they set. They live their lives in such a way that we’re honored to know them and hope to live up to their example.

And heroes, real-life heroes, rarely get recognized. That’s why National Hero Day encourages you to recognize the heroes in your life.

Heroes All Around Us

Some wear uniforms, like Christy McIntosh of Pensacola, FL who served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Or like high-school football player Zac Clark of Ohio whose quick thinking and strength lifted a Volkswagen off of his neighbor, saving his life.

Other heroes spur us to action or to lead a better life. They may do this through their words like Jim Cook of Oklahoma who wrote to columnist Jim Priest, teaching him a little something about character and love. A real-life hero might take us on a journey we can only imagine taking. Like Dr. Garrett Reisman, a former NASA astronaut and engineer who later joined SpaceX.

Another kind of hero makes things happen. Whether it’s filling a need or making the impossible happen, some heroes go to amazing lengths to get a job done. For example, Donald Harris of New Jersey who by day was a real estate manager but at Christmastime answered a letter to Santa via the U.S. Postal Service’s Letters to Santa program. His answer to a request to make a father’s life easier was to enlist his associates in obtaining a townhouse for the family at a much lower rent.

Heroes come in many forms, you see. They rescue us, inspire us, and most of all, they believe in us.

Tick Tock Day @ Tick Tock Day
Dec 29 all-day

Tick Tock Day, observed annually on December 29th, reminds us to complete any unfinished business that might need addressing before the end of the year.

As the end of the year approaches, many items call for our attention. Unfinished business usually needs to be wrapped up before the end of the calendar year. Things like larger business purchases and charitable donations for the tax year may need to be transacted before December 31st.

Another thing to consider is your medical plan. Does your deductible start over? Do you have a Flexible Savings Account with funds to use? Some employers offer annual benefits that will be lost if they aren’t used by the end of the year. Time is running out.

Tick Tock Day may also be a day to look at personal goals. Did you finish reading that book? Bucket lists call our names. Where do we want to travel? We may still need to explore some exotic foods, too. Maybe your goals are grander or simpler. Whatever they are, tick-tock.
